| INNOVATION STORIES (2000) |
![]() |
| To mark the millennium, The Design Council selected over 100 construction related products as 'innovation stories', these range from whole buildings to individual components, which were tested to see if they opened up new opportunities, challenged existing conventions, were environmentally responsive, demonstrated the application of new or existing technology, solved a key problem or had clear user benefits. The projects illustrated in this exhibition demonstrate the relationship between architectural design and industry and the range of contributions which the contemporary architect can make from environmental impact to brand image. The exhibition also features contributions by architects outside their traditional role - to engineering structures and products with larger production potential. Featured projects include: The Abbey Mills pumping station Allies & Morrison, Sainsbury's Greenwich Chetwood Associates, Solar office Akeler/Studio E Architects, Bluewater Park Bovis Lendlease, EDF Fougere pylons Ian Ritchie Associates, Motorway Signage and E66 Wind turbine Foster & Partners. |

| SPONTANEOUS CONSTRUCTION (1998)
Portable buildings are amongst the earliest artifacts made by human race and some patterns of traditional buildings have not only existed more or less unchanged for millennia but also are inspiration from which the permanent buildings forms of today have arisen. Portable architecture is manifested in a wide range of patterns, many of which are audacious in size, ingenious in strategy and dramatic in form. It also possesses a unique quality associated with event that static architecture can never match. It is found in all fields of human activity habitation, education, entertainment, medicine, commerce and industry, and portable structures use many types of lightweight building materials and constructional strategies, and significantly, technology and techniques which are otherwise used primarily outside the building industry. The exhibition is split into six sections looking at: Definition, Tradition and Invention, Innovation in Industry, Future Perspectives and Contemporary Practitioners. Produced in 1998. |
