Surface finish is affected by many factors. This presentation examines the selection of the best materials for fine finishes and re uses of different materials natural ply and textural finishes. The talk concludes with some unusual formwork materials and general rules for handling and care of formwork facing materials.

This session provides a specialist viewpoint based upon wide experience and examines rigidity of assembly for minimum deflection, design for full hydro static pressure from Self-Compacting Concrete grout tight joints, fixing of panel assembly without nails tie bolt location and working to architect’s drawings.

1910 Case Study – the Cass Sculpture Foundation Centre Craig Downie
Completed in 2006, the centre provides new offices, a library, exhibition space and archives for a unique collection of 21st century British sculpture. The greys and whites of the surfaces refer to the indigenous flint and provides a contrast between inside and out, and the hard and soft expression of the building and the landscape.

The calm, robust interior of the exposed white concrete - which was not easy to achieve - and hard blockwork walls, works against the changing spectrum of the soft landscape.
